Painting With Light Drawing With Light
This is a dually directed body of abstract photography with which I am either painting or drawing with light, each with its own visual sensibility directing my explorations. This work connects contemporary digital practices with historic, tradition based definitions of photography, and whose lush surfaces offer an enduring physical presence as strong in its impact as is the ephemeral, light-mark-making itself. The subject matter and rendering resurrect neo-expressionist, product-centered aesthetics. The project engages the ongoing challenge to define photography within contemporary art practice (-- in terms such as romantic, conceptual, transitional/transformational, and utilitarian/multi-media). It connects the recurring identity crises repeatedly attributed to the art of painting with photography’s own identity crises. My artistic process thus reflects the larger, ongoing evolution of photography as an art. It transcends the polarity now rending the art, when it is defined merely as technical practice or as product.
